I have had quite a response about logging onto Compuserve with the S3a/S3. I am going to detail the steps that *I* use for logging on. These may not be the steps that others use, however they work for me with my equipment and using Compuserve's Packet Network. Ok, lets get started. Get your stuff and lay it out in front of you. 1: Psion S3a/S3. 2: 3link 3: NULL Modem 4: Modem First, Do you have these? If you dont have (1,2,4) go get one. If you dont have (3) NULL Modem do the following. Take your *MODEM* and *3LINK* to your local Radio Shack (or any local computer parts place). First you will need a NULL Modem (sometimes called Modem Eliminator). Get one that fits either one of the connectors on the *MODEM* or the *3LINK*, it doesn't really matter. Now find another connector that makes them all stick together. Your modem should now be attached to your 3link with a NULL Modem somewhere in between. I wouldn't leave the store without *SEEING* them all stuck together. Oh, make sure you only have 1 NULL Modem. Now, with 1,2,3,4 from above, lets logon. 1. Plug your modem into the 3Link and the 3Link into the Psion. 2. Turn the modem on, then the Psion. 3. Go to the *COMMS* app on the Psion and hit enter. 4. When the *COMMS* app comes up type atz then press (the key) 5. You should see an: OK below the atz. If not recheck you steps then mail me about your problem. 6. Now we need to set the comm parameters. Press J. 7. Check to see if the baud rate is the same as the modems. If not adjust. Set *DATA BITS* to 7 Set *STOP BITS* to 1 Set *PARITY* to Even. Hit 8. Back at the terminal screen (with atz, and OK) type the following: atx4m1td###-#### where ###-#### is your local Compuserve access number. (ie. atx4m1td736-8600 for me in San Antonio, Texas) Press 9. You should hear your modem dial and make a connection. If not try again. If not again, see below. 10. Now you should see on you screen something like *CONNECT 9600*, press (you may have to press a couple of times) 11. You should now see: Host Name: press, CIS 12. You should not see: User ID: enter your id# (ie, 73564,3113) then 13. Now, you'll be prompted for your Password: enter it and press . 14. Soon you'll see a prompt of some sort. enter SET TERM TTY (this will temporaily set you terminal type to TTY for the Psion) 15. You should see another prompt. type SET LINES ## (where ## is the number of lines for your screen) 16. If you've gotten this far you'll soon get a prompt. enter GO PALMTOP and let us know that it worked... Problems. If you couldnt get the atz thingy to work. Make sure you turned the modem on before the PSION, or at least before you entered the *COMMS* program. If after the CONNECT #### when I press I get garbage on the screen. Make sure you set: BAUD RATE = Baud rate for your modem DATA BITS = 7 STOP BITS = 1 PARITY = Even It works up until the Host Name: part. Instead I get This was worked out using Compserve's Packet Network. It will be slightly different using another method to access CIS. When I start *COMMS* I get a message about: FILE OR DEVICE IN USE Make sure that the *LINK* option is *OFF* from the system screen. To make sure, at the system screen press -L and make sure that *REMOTE LINK* is set to *OFF* I cant get my modem to connect. It just dials and makes annoying noises. Hmm, Try starting over from 1. If that doesn't work then mail me and let me know the particulars of what happens. Stuff I use: PSION S3a and PSION 3 Infotel Pocket 14.4k/14.4k FAX/Modem. This modem is small has lights, speaker, battery power, AC adapter and works fine with both my S3 and my Sub-Note best of all it is $169 3Link. I hope this helps, If anyone has any questions please feel free to drop me a line. Rob Snow CIS: 73564,3113 Internet: rsnow@world.std.com
